Guyana Allocates $4.8 Million for National Digital ID Project in Latest 2025 Budget

by Admin

In a significant move towards digital transformation, the Government of Guyana has allocated $1 billion Guyanese dollars (approximately US$4.8 million) in its 2025 budget to implement a national electronic identification (e-ID) system.his initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to integrating digital solutions into public services, aiming to streamline operations and improve transparency.

The e-ID system is designed to provide citizens with biometric identification cards, which will serve as a secure and verifiable means of identification. These cards are expected to reduce identity theft and fraudulent activities, while simplifying access to a wide range of services. The government has emphasized that the rollout of these biometric e-ID cards will commence this year and will eventually become mandatory for all citizens.

This investment is part of a broader strategy to modernize Guyana’s identification systems and services. Other initiatives include the implementation of a new Electronic Passport Control System at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and the deployment of the Education Management Information System in over 1,000 schools to enhance data collection, with full deployment expected by the end of 2025.

The government’s push for digital transformation is further reflected in the overall expansion of Guyana’s budget, which has increased by 20.6% from the previous year, totaling $1.382 trillion. This increase aims, in part, to extend digitized services to remote rural communities, ensuring inclusive access to the benefits of digital governance.

While the national digital ID program promises enhanced service delivery and security, it has also sparked discussions about data privacy and the need for robust legislation to protect citizens’ information. As the government advances this initiative, addressing these concerns will be crucial to ensure public trust and the successful adoption of the e-ID system.
